In collaboration with Zuleya, the newly created retail brand by the Fatima Bint Mohamed Bin Zayed Initiative - FBMI, which sells sustainable handmade carpets and lifestyle products made by women in Afghanistan, designers Pallavi Dean and Ana Carreras have developed a new collection of carpets titled ‘Metamorphosis’.
Transformation is at the heart of the design concept that tip its hat to how Zuleya is impacting not only the lives of families in Afghanistan, but also influencing a shift in how design may be created and consumed.
With a focus on contemporarising centuries old Afghani rug making craft and revelling the slow design philosophy, the collection is an opportunity to raise the bar for greater representation in design through the marriage of tradition and modern craftsmanship, one knot at a time. Designed to be sold commercially, in a ‘social entrepreneurship’ model, these aren’t works of art to hang in a museum – they are products to use and appreciate.
