In the age of speed and uncertainty, culture and identity are fast-moving targets. The moment a designer builds their creative assumptions on facts and information or ‘truth’, they becomes obsolete. Context is even more elusive in fast-growing regions like the Middle East, when cities continuously change and challenge their own identity and image.

What is constant and what is in flux? What should designers draw their inspirations from when the context seems forever evolving?

The pandemic has forced us to reflect, internally and externally, and get a real grasp of what is important, what are our constant and rooted values and what is evolving. In architecture and design this can lead to extremes with designers weighing one value over the other, individually; this can have long-term impact on how the cities, homes and buildings one designs may impact the communities that these projects are planted into.

‘Identity on the move: Context as a Form Generator’ is a study in finding a common ground for a vast range of projects in extremely different contexts. The proposal explore how the process of design could produce a field of creative solutions and yet celebrate the uniqueness of a place, its culture and locality.
