There are certain milestones on the international design calendar that are truly worth looking forward to months in advance. And for the fourth year in a row, from October 25-28, these include the always surprising and innovative Downtown Design trade fair in association with Dubai Design District (d3).
As I scroll through the exhibitor list I can't help but marvel at all the wonders I'll soon uncover. A few items stand out and I'm excited to share them with you:
1.Bat Eye's eye-catching Arc sideboard had me at first sight; inspired by the D. Luiz I bridge in Porto, it blends old world craftsmanship and modern sophistication in its handmade tiles and iron base.
2.The traditional wood working techniques of Danish design always inspire me and they are beautifully brought to the forefront in the Hans J Wegner designed Shell Chair CH07 by Carl Hansen & Son.
3. Meanwhile, Cecilia Setterdhal's creations are a wonder and especially her Watching print which is also available as a rug; this "art for the floor" is sure to bring a twist to any room.
4. De Castelli's Solometallo "artefact" designed by Nikita Bettoni is a harmonious amalgam of copper, brass and stainless steel and catches the light -- and the eye -- beautifully.
5. On the technologically advanced side of the design spectrum, Gaggenau's Illuminating Dishwasher 400 Series is a working piece of art -- most of my dinner parties will end in the kitchen if my dreams of installing it at home come true!
6.But let's go back to carpets -- I can't help myself -- and Illulian's optical illusion Rehab carpet is utterly mesmerizing!
7. I adore everything Patricia Urquiola touches -- as she well knows -- so I wasn't surprised to find myself lusting after her Roll Chairs for Kettal; especially the black version.
8. Back to traditional artisanship techniques and KOHLER's bathroom furniture in Marrakesh Design on Camber is such a beauty to behold and would make any bath time a true luxury.
9. Lasvit's breathtaking, glass, Lollipop Lighting designed by Boris Klimek makes me feel nostalgic and will surely upgrade the décor of any interior.
10. And last but definitely not least, Moroso's Glider sofa designed by Ron Arad is beckoning me to make it my next home purchase.
In fact, I'm sold on all of these items. Let's put it this way… I know where I'll be come October!
