In the lead up to Escapefromsofa’s participation at Downtown Design 2015, we asked designer and co-founder Mahmut Kefeli a few questions about the brand and what they plan to bring with them.
Escape from Sofa will be exhibiting with Istanbul Design Week, as part of the Destination initiative at this year’s Downtown Design.
Tell us about Escapefromsofa.
Escapefromsofa was established February 2009 in Istanbul, Turkey and we produce furniture and lighting pieces. We think, we collaborate and we create – that’s the way new pieces are produced here. We have a great team of in-house designers, so our goal is to merge these qualified skills and different perspectives into a unified, strong idea. We also enjoy working with new and emerging materials and technologies to create our products.
What is your work inspired by?
All Escapefromsofa products and projects are inspired by nature. We strive to create rich experiences for our clients, taking into account the disparities of their everyday lives.
What are you showing at Downtown Design?
We’ll be exhibiting the Lagoon collection. We haven’t shown this line anywhere else.
What is the overall idea behind your collection?
The idea for Lagoon comes from finding the right curve for the right product within the flow of nature.
Describe the processes involved in the making of the collection
It starts by first creating an interior design project. We set the scene for that project and then search for the most valuable and aesthetic products to fit the scene. With that came the premise for the Lagoon collection.
Are the products you are showing already for sale?
We’re showing this collection for the first time at Downtown Design 2015 - so it’s not available for sale yet.
