NEO is a design studio that was established 11 years ago by the Portuguese industrial designer Rodrigo Vairinhos in Germany, with a mission to create contemporary design pieces that merge functionality and aesthetics without lacking elegance and freshness.
Going beyond traditional parameters in order to create quirky designs, Rodrigo Vairinhos’ style is characterised by unique and cutting-edge products infused post-modern playfulness whilst maintaining their purpose. Returning for the second time to Downtown Design, NEO will display a selection of lighting products and home accessories straddle industrial design and fine art.
Both emotional and functional in nature, his pieces incorporate a careful selection of warm and organic materials and simple local production techniques used to make uncomplicated, yet stylish products in his quest for poetic simplicity.
The ORGANIC collection is a marriage between cork and ceramic, fusing the two materials in unique compositions. The dramatic draped cork leather over a glazed ceramic shell lends extraordinary expression and movement to this lighting fixture. Full of texture and depth, the ORGANIC lamp is carefully handcrafted and adds a tactile element of warmth and touch to any interior.
Here, Rodrigo Vairinhos has created a carpet for an eco-conscious and vegan lifestyle. With a captivating design that mimicks the form of a cowhide, the designer made use of cork as an alternative material, a non-animal product that’s both ecological and renewable. Fresh and cheeky, it also provides extra insulation.
Extending the cork motif even further, Corky Lips is one of Vairinhos’ highly successful pieces that takes advantage of the material’s magnificent characteristics, belying whether it’s a rocking chair, puff, or interactive sculpture. In this extravagant visual form, it oozes comfort, sensuality and harmony.
PRINT is a minimal yet decorative multi-purpose lighting fixture inspired by the ‘plug-and-play’ principle. Meant to hide the socket only, the four ceramic pendant lamps are combined with four different printed geometric black patterns over white glazed ceramic, bringing the bulb to life.
Playing with the immense possibilities of geometry, Rodrigo Vairinhos designed THE LOVERS lighting collection in a harmonious set of three individual designs that come in monochrome colours. Inspired by Arabic culture, the lanterns are an interpretation of the traditional Arabic dress code, creating the mood of a man wearing a Kandhoura or a woman wearing an Abaya. Symbolizing the personification of geometry, this collection of pendant lamps is meant to look like the hanging three-dimensional pictograms or icons that are brought to life in the image of a love triangle.
Designed to be an unobtrusive functional piece of lighting, WHITE NOISE has a clean and sleek design that is subtly enhanced with its dramatic paleness and white light. The WHITE NOISE lamp is a beautifully sculpted suspension ceramic lamp that has a remarkable delicacy and simplicity while still directing and shaping light in a theatrical manner.
