These attributes, passed down from legendary designers such as Le Corbusier, Max Bill, Mario Botta or Hans Bellmann, still make the country’s design industry tick. This year, Downtown Design, Dubai’s interiors and furniture fair dedicated to original design, will celebrate Swiss design with iconic and contemporary pieces by legendary design brand Vitra and creative modular furniture by USM.
Vitra, one of the world’s most respected brands in furniture and interiors, feature products and concepts that are developed in an intensive design process, bringing together engineering excellence with the creative genius of leading international designers. With longevity of materials, construction and aesthetics as a leading principle, many of their classics have been in continuous production since the 1950s and are today featured in design museums across the world, including the acclaimed Vitra Design Museum.
USM was founded more than a century ago, originally as a producer of iron works and window fittings. In 1961, the Münsingen-based factory was transformed from a large, manually-oriented metal production plant into a modern, industrial enterprise by Swiss architect Fritz Haller. The facility’s modular architecture inspired USM’s flexible storage solutions and the pioneering furniture product known today as the USM Haller System.
