Kettal marks half a century of great design by collaborations with Doshi-Levien, Jasper Morrison, Patricia Urquiola, Rodolfo Dordoni, and Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec. Experience their incredible design legacy at this year's Downtown Design, in Dubai.

Cala Armchair – Doshi-Levien

The Cala high-backed armchair has a majestic spatial presence with transparent and light surfaces. The open weave of the rope provides a latticed window for visual privacy, suitable for outdoor dining as well as lounging.

A wide selection of metal coatings, rope colours and cushion fabrics allow the chair to be tailored to many projects. The chair comes with two options of teak legs or an aluminum pedestal base.

Riva Collection – Jasper Morrison

The Riva collection of outdoor furniture is above all about achieving a certain atmosphere for the better enjoyment of outdoor space. The plank construction follows a long and varied line of precedents, and offers a high level of comfort and good looks.

The collection comprises dining armchairs, club armchair, dining tables, two seater and three seater sofa, small tables and deckchair, all made in teak.

Kettal Mesh Sofa and Table – Patricia Urquiola

Kettal Mesh is reminiscent of building facades that let in light and air while keeping the elements out. It combines natural and industrial materials, hard and soft surfaces, and transparent and opaque volumes to create a family of outdoor furniture based on contrasts. The expanded metal used for the sofa backrests and tables lends lightness while providing support for the cushions and hard table tops. In contrast, the slight slope of the sofa armrests invites the user to sit back and relax. This combination gives the impression of a cozy living room, only outdoors.

The Kettal Mesh collection is extended to include left and right corner modules, a central module, and a bench, making the combinations endless. A dining table and a center table have also been added.

Roll Chair – Patricia Urquiola

This ironic intervention on conventional upholstery converts a regular backrest into two independent wraps connected by colourful straps. A simple aluminum structure frames the protagonist of this chair, the cushions. The straps are connected to the main structure by two pins that can be easily removed, allowing the user to store the cushions during the winter. The seat cushion is supported by a semi-transparent micro fabric.

Boma Collection – Rodolfo Dordoni

The Boma collection, designed by Rodolfo Dordoni for Kettal, was born from the need of outdoor furniture to withstand environmental challenges without sacrificing comfort and aesthetics.

In this case, the flexible and light frame supports soft seats made with large modular cushions, that creates a warm cosy feeling for the user.

Stampa Club Armchair – Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec

Stampa is a full-blooded aluminum armchair combining diverse manufacturing techniques. The injection-molded ring connects the stamped seat, the back, and the hydro-formed legs, reinforcing the shell. A calyx shaped metal shell is inhabited by carefully organized punched holes. This allows for the creation of delicate shapes that recall textile sensations and are robust enough to stand the test of time and outdoor environments.

Pavilions – Kettal Studios

Beyond bringing these new lines to Downtown Design, Kettal will also be sponsoring the café seating area, which will feature furniture as well as Kettal’s Pavilions. The pavilions provide shaded sanctuary for a collection of aluminum furniture and pergolas painted with polyester powder. Daybed structures and aluminum pergolas can be personalized and configured with blinds, net curtains, panels and ceilings.

The Evolution of Kettal

Since its founding 50 years ago by Manuel Alorda, Kettal has been designing and manufacturing outdoor furniture. While Kettal’s predominate material source is aluminum, it has not been without a combination of skilled engineering and creativity to manufacture the innovative pieces that contain a level of aesthetics while serving functionality and durability. Today, all the products in the catalogue are designed and manufactured in the firm’s plant in a small coastal town 45 km from Barcelona. This lends products European quality, with every detail taken care of. In addition, the closeness of the factory means that products can be customized to meet clients’ needs, making each piece of furniture unique and exclusive.
