Taking design cues from minimalist, Japanese-inspired aesthetics, Beirut-born interior designer Thomas Trad was appointed to create the 2024 concept for The Forum.

Fascinated with manufacturing processes, craftsmanship and the natural beauty of materials, Thomas Trad is passionate about responsible and function design.

Trad’s aesthetic is one of both organic and abstract shapes, and coupled with his experimental approach to materials, textures, and finishes, this inexhaustible search for the unexpected and beautiful in contemporary design has earned him a reputation as one of this region’s emerging designers to watch.

I’m honored to be appointed to design The Forum for this year’s Downtown Design - an exciting opportunity to create a space where the design industry and creative community come together and engage in meaningful discussions and workshops, in a programme that aims to support the growth of the region’s thriving design scene and promote the great talent of the Middle EastDrawing inspiration from mid-century modern and Japanese aesthetics, I aim to craft an environment that is both intimate and visually striking. I’m looking forward to seeing how this space enhances the experience for all attendees.”

This year’s concept for The Forum, hosting the main talks programmes of Downtown Design and Dubai Design Week, will offer a cozy and welcoming environment. Evoking calm and comfort, the auditorium-like space is covered with green fabric from head to toe, complemented by striking red seating in contrast. A large circular opening of amber-textured glass allows natural light to filter through, mimicking the warmth of the sun. This carefully curated design concept creates a serene and memorable setting within the fair.

Trad attended London’s Central Saint Martins and the Suikoushya International Craft School in Kyoto, and has worked with the world-renowned studios Fredrikson Stallard and Michael Anastassiades, and has over the years developed a twin passion for traditional and contemporary techniques alike, which he now brings to light since founding his own returned in own design studio in 2016.
