First established in Egypt with the specific mission to revive and preserve the country’s fading craft, Etqaan can trace its history as far back as the 1900s.
In the 11th century Egyptians excelled in fine wood works, creating unique designs that drew from Coptic, Islamic and European influences. Carpentry was a serious form of art that required superior technical skill and patience as intricate designs and Arabic calligraphy were meticulously engraved upon tables, doors and rooftop domes. It involved integrating different, often difficult to manipulate material such as metal, mother of pearl, bones and natural leather with wood to create a piece of furniture that were perceived as collector’s items. Drawing inspiration from this ancient tradition, Etqaan recreates some of these ancient Egyptian design and crafts using both traditional and modern methods of production.
The name Etqaan, Arabic for ‘mastering’, embodies the brand’s essence in perfecting craftsmanship, original design and quality products. With branding that is in authentic ‘Koufi’ calligraphy, Etqaan strives to reinforce their dedication to rich Arab heritage in all facets of their design.
The brands’ latest collection will be showcased at Downtown Design, featuring design pieces made of using Egyptian wood with a mother of pearl and bone inlay.
