Downtown Design speaks to Principal of SACD about design inspiration, creativity and her collection at the fair

SACD is an interior design and advisory firm specializing in culturally attuned experiences. Every project has a unique storyline combining culture, Islamic art and history to create serene museum-like interiors. With over 20 years experience we work with government ministries, cultural organizations and select private clients.

Their interest in culture and Islamic art has given rise to SACD’s first furniture collection 'Shadows and Patterns’. This collection is inspired by the beauty and timelessness of Islamic geometric patterns. What unites the pieces is the evolution of patterns and materials from select objects of the resplendent Islamic Empires. 'Shadows and Patterns’ is a 21st century representation of ancient Islamic art forms, combining traditional elements with modern-day materials and aesthetics to create collectable masterpieces.

SACD is the winner of this year’s ‘International Design and Architecture Awards (2017)’ with nominations for The Aga Khan Architectural Award (2016) and The Audi Innovation Award (2017).

1. What does design mean to you?

As an interior designer my personal goal with any design is to transmit beauty and serenity to anything I do.

2. Where do you find creative inspiration?

I go through phases of creative inspiration; however my constant inspiration remains to be travel. I seek destinations of strong cultural heritage that are inspired by Islamic art. I am especially interested in museums and galleries, which carry ancient Islamic artifacts as well as showcase contemporary artwork inspired by Islamic art and heritage.

3. What is your design process when it comes to your collections?

My process in design; be it an interior or a furniture collection; all starts with a story line. The stories are always linked to an Islamic art source; be it a color, an artifact or even contemporary piece. I need to fall in love with a story to allow my own internal brainstorming. Only then can I start sketching, pulling materials and creating.

4. What collections will you be bringing to Downtown Design?

We will be showcasing our first furniture collection entitled “Shadows and Patterns”. It is inspired by the beauty, elegance and timelessness of Islamic geometrical patterns. What unites the pieces is the evolution of patterns and materials from select Islamic artifacts that resonated with me.

This is a collection of 5 collectable pieces to include, the High Back ‘Mashrabiya Chair’, the Low Back ‘Mashrabiya’ Chair, the ‘Sadaf’ Coffee Table, the ‘Sadaf’ Sideboard and the ‘Samarra’ Accent Table.

5. What are the greatest influences on your design style?

The greatest influences on my design style are ‘time, Islamic art and serenity’. As human beings we evolve with time. I am not the same designer I was ten years ago and it is ‘time’ that has allowed me to evolve and look at things differently. I come from a very diverse background and seek identity. This has stirred my interest in ‘Islamic art’; in it I found a sense of belonging. ‘Serenity’ is the last influencer and the anchor to all my work, as I personally seek places of reflection, spirituality and calm.
