Duravit’s collaboration with Starck brings an ethos of purity, restraint and ultra-modernist appeal to the bathroom, which is seamlessly transformed into a harmonious living arena.

Duravit is a leading German manufacturer of sanitary ceramics, bathroom furniture, shower trays and bathtubs, whirl and wellness systems, shower-toilets and accessories, and one which has also become a household name. Why? Because the brand opts for supremely comfortable and timelessly modern solutions that enhance the quality of life - something Duravit calls ‘living bathrooms’. Its products are often instantly recognisable, as reflected in their collaboration with high-profile industrial designers and architects, such as Philippe Starck, EOOS, Phoenix Design, Christian Werner and Matteo Thun.

Focusing on good design that transcends trends, the company was initially founded to produce earthenware crockery before it conquered the bathroom. The major breakthrough came in 1994 with the Starck 1 series and its purist, white and ultra-minimalist aesthetic, subtle curves and clean lines. The range of all-white toilets, bidets and sinks that French designer Philippe Starck created for Duravit flowed seamlessly in effortless elegance.

For Downtown Design, Duravit will show their updated collection with Starck: the ME range. In a similar pure, back-to-basics approach of balanced proportions, Starck focuses on six versatile washbasin solutions that still manage to lend a sensuous essence to their elementary features.

The delicate edges give the washbasins a light, almost rimless appearance, while their inner basins are conveniently deep. In addition to the no-nonsense design, Starck and Duravit incorporated innovative technology; new developments have made it possible to reduce the weight of the toilets and bidets, resulting in attractive, sleek, self-contained components without attachment niches at the sides.

ME is also the first Duravit range in which the urinal boasts the innovative rimless technology. (Toilets with a low water consumption of 4.5 litres and less, the Architec water-less urinal and the use of low-energy LED lights are just a few examples of how Duravit has further introduced high standards of sustainability into the bathroom).

To further show the versatility of Duravit’s collaboration, the below bathtub, complete with its ergonomic headrest, is from the Cape Cod range, another interpretation by Starck in his attempt to integrate the natural environment with bathroom design, inspired by the designer’s own house on the beach. Here it becomes no longer far-fetched to equate your bathroom with an in-house spa, a holistic space for rejuvenation.
