Earthy and environmentally conscious designs are the showcase from Beirut Design Week at this year's Downtown Design

Three designers will be showcased from Middle Eastern neighbour Beirut Design Week, at Downtown Design 2016. The collaboration supports the MENA region as an ever-expanding design market, with Downtown Design as a central platform for both established and emerging designers.

Growing Sustainably was this year’s Beirut Design Week theme. Occurring May 20th – 29th and organized by the MENA Design Research Center, BDW focused its efforts on the broad spectrum of sustainability, recognizing that while the primary focus is ecology and environment, we cannot forget about social, cultural, and economic impacts.

Muriel Kai, Paola Sakr, Tamara Barrage all take this inclusive definition of sustainability to new heights.

Tea lights and jewelry boxes are among the many ways in which Muriel Kai’s Fruit Leather material can be manipulated.  Created from fruit and vegetable waste, the 100% organic leather is a sight to behold, flexing to fit Kai’s designs. The end product translucent, smooth, and environmentally thoughtful.

Equally conscientious is Paola Sakr’s line called Morning Ritual. Inspired by memory and innovated for awareness, the biodegradable containers consist of used coffee grounds and newspaper waste.

Tuning in to the sensory characteristics of object interaction, Tamara Barrage plays with form and texture to create experimental experience.
