Al Khaznah Tannery is a local company, using local products that are ethical and sustainably sourced. But they have big ideas and are using Downtown Design as a platform to launch their globally relevant products.

With a contemporary range of ethical camel leather products and a newly branded luxury atelier, Al Khaznah Tannery is a local company with a bright future on the global design stage.

Having recently collaborated with Philippe Starck and Pierre Corthay in Paris, Cyrille Bieri and Gumwood Yacht interiors in Dubai, the products have evolved a long way from the pounding machines in the processing plant, and during Downtown Design, the tannery will present their latest partnership with renowned Italian loose furniture designers focusing on residential and corporate markets.

It is an exciting time for leather in the region, says Jean Marie Gigante, the general manager at Al Khaznah Tannery. “Whilst the unique aesthetic and physical performance of our exclusive materials are now fully recognized abroad they’re still nascent in our own region.

“With Dubai clearly becoming a true cultural hub, we felt that this is the perfect venue for the presentation of products designed and conceived with our avant-garde leather production.”

Emirati designer Khalid Shafar, was one of the first to approach the tannery, which now promotes its products under the name Atelier AK. It is thanks to partnerships like this that Gigante feels the brand has grown alongside the design scene in the region.

“If this market was perceived as immature and un-sophisticated a few years ago when we started our operations at the tannery, this is now clearly changing and Middle East professionals are now looking for better quality products to support the region’s responsible growth ambitions.”

The full range of products will be displayed at the Atelier AK Downtown Design booth for the duration of the fair.
