The wood, provided by the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) and the pavilion design, imagined by T.ZED Architects, come together to create a unique architectural experience for fair visitors. The basic concept is to create a somber cocoon that is gently placed in a dynamic and frenzied environment. The overall structure allows individuals to physically and metaphorically disconnect themselves from the surrounding urban setting and invite them into a quiet space where moments of reflection simply emerge.

The challenge put forth by AHEC provides a unique opportunity to test the durability and performance of TMA in a climate and context that are very different from where TMA is most commonly used and naturally sourced. Given the post-treatment properties of this wood, T.ZED Architects wanted to re-use and create a unique installation that could demonstrate and challenge its thermal versatility and durability.

Inspired by the likes of Frei Otto and Peter Zumthor, the goal was to portray a visual lightness within a physically heavy structure. Serene interior moments are created by natural light drawn from above, a connection to the sky beyond; movement of the sun is traced through the movement of light within.
T.ZED Architects pushes for using natural materials, believing it is the best way for architects and craftsmen to remain sustainable and relevant in today’s design world. They constantly challenge the ways in which traditional crafts and natural resources are utilized, playing on the notion of contextualizing what otherwise would seem to be out of context.
Their collaboration with industry leading organizations such as AHEC promotes the use of sustainable products like American hardwoods, and raises the awareness of the value and quality of raw materials, which are enhanced through their architectural works.
