Born in 1962, Sacha Walckhoff spent most of his childhood in Switzerland. He met Christian Lacroix and became his artistic consultant in 1992 and has since made his mark in the design industry. Sacha Walckhoff was then appointed Studio Director in 1996, and became the couturier’s right-hand man in 2002. When the couturier left the House of Christian Lacroix in 2009, Sacha Walckhoff was appointed Creative Director. Passionate about art, design and decoration, Sacha’s own apartment in Paris has been featured in many international interior design magazines.
Downtown Design chats with Sacha about creative inspiration, what design means to him and the brands to see at this year’s fair:
1. What does design mean to you?
Design is a way to make our lives easier, smarter and filled with more beauty
2. What is the one piece of design you cannot live without?
A tough question- I love being surrounded by beautiful things but if I had to choose one it would be the B BED I designed for Savoir Beds in London.
3. Where do you find creative inspiration?
Everywhere actually- any little thing I might see can be the base of a new idea but museums are of course terribly inspiring. I was in Berlin two days ago and visited the Broehan Museum which houses a huge collection of art and craft from the beginning of the 20th century. It’s always stunning to see how many incredible objects have been created by gifted people throughout the ages. I feel very humble in front of all those talents.
4. What are you looking forward to the most at Downtown Design?
Surprises, new talents and beauty
5. The 5 brands that are a must see at the fair?
Designers Guild and Maison D’art which are showing my Christian Lacroix home décor collections; Moroso with the creations of my friends Sebastian Herkner and Marcel Wanders; Preciosa for their stunning glass lighting; B&B Italia for their always creative collections.
